When our ego is unaware of its own tendencies and reactions to everything that is happening all around us – in its ignorance of its liability – will blame others and outer circumstances for everything wrong in our life.
But…we ALWAYS have a choice
Yet, why would we choose otherwise, when blaming others protects us from our demons and those feeling and emotions we have spent a lifetime denying, hiding or numbing?
Because, in the end our physical body and our mental health pay the price
Life does not have to be hard or painful – but our unaware ego doesn’t know this
We all know of the age-old tale of having an Angel on one shoulder and the Devil on the other. We blame our bad choices and negative thoughts on giving into the devil and our good choices and positive thoughts on listening to the angel.
Do you listen more to the “Devil” on your shoulder or the Angel?”
Most likely it will depend on the situation and/or the people you are with – however, the awareness to which one you are listening to and giving in to at any given moment is key to moving from a life lived mostly in fear, anger, frustration & stress to love, appreciation, acceptance & joy.
Our state of happiness has nothing to do with what is going on all around us, it is all about what is going on within us. What thoughts are you having, believing in and entertaining? What stories and emotions are you feeding and nurturing? The unaware ego, unwittingly feeds and entertains fear and avoids at all costs feelings of vulnerability and taking responsibility for feelings and emotions.
Manipulating, controlling, blaming and ultimately numbing emotions because they are too painful to experience is the workings of our unaware ego.
When our “unaware ego” is in control of our life, we are unaware of the havoc this creates in our life.
Let’s change the story up a bit and instead of having an Angel & Devil to blame – let’s refer to our brain. From this moment on… think of your left brain as the “devil side” and your right brain as the “angel side”
Our left brain is often referred to as our analytical thinking brain and our right brain is often referred to as our creative emotional brain.
Jill Bolte Taylor – scientist and author of “Whole Brain Living” is a brain scientist who experienced a stroke in 1996 that affected the entire left hemisphere of her brain. She then experienced the effect of fully being in the right hemisphere of her brain only – until her left brain was eventually recovered. This process of recovery took her approximately 8 years and what she discovered during this time, is that we all have 4 brains.
According to Jill Bolte Taylor we have both a thinking and emotional left brain AND both an emotional and thinking right brain.
I would highly recommend this book to read on your own but for the sake of understanding where I am coming from in writing this blog – I wanted to share her experience and her perspective.
Our left brain thinks linearly and keeps us cautious, constricted and on our toes with often compulsive and obsessive thoughts and emotions of fear, judgement, doubt, anger, frustration & resentment. Our left brain is either stuck dwelling in the past or worried, planning and organizing the future.
Our right brain on the other hand lives only in the present moment. There is no fear in the present moment. Our right brain thinks experientially (and thinks in pictures) goes with the flow, is fearless, creative, curious, flexible, loving, compassionate, kind, accepting of everything & everyone and is open to all possibilities. Our right brain is all about the collective.
If we were to completely live our life from the left brain, we would be in a state of an unaware ego for every part of our day.
If we were to completely live our life from the right brain, we would most likely not ever get anything done.
We need both
We need both to work together
Our left brain (devil) lives primarily in thoughts of stress, compulsiveness and fear, however when it comes to getting things done and organizing our lives – our left brain is a superstar – unless we are “taken down” by the stress, compulsiveness and fear – this can be a rollercoaster ride through life and one many of us take. Alternately when our left brain is open enough to see there is a better way of dealing with life – it embraces the right brains, openness, concepts and perspective. This usually happens once one is open to some sort of Spiritual practice and often happens when one has hit “rock bottom” but that doesn’t always have to be the case – we can open our minds to embrace many things that can’t be explained but can be felt and experienced. We can tap into our right brains feelings and thoughts.
We can tap into our imagination and all the possibilities of this creative, innovative & resilient right brain.
Our right brain (Angel) lives primarily in thoughts of acceptance, kindness & love. I like to refer to the right brain as my higher self. That part of me that will guide me away from what isn’t working in my life, towards better thoughts, solutions and experiences. Listening to my intuition is when I am led in the direction of my higher self and have access to my right brain. As I was raised in a primarily left brain thinking environment, this takes conscious awareness on my part and requires me to often take long hard looks in the mirror to “see” into those parts of myself I used to want to keep hidden. I realize now, this was my unaware ego who was hiding ME and it wasn’t until I embraced these parts of myself that I was truly able to see myself as strong, loveable, resilient & whole.
When we can function from a place where the whole brain is involved in our day to day decision makings, intention settings and awareness’s – then we begin to discover a whole new world. A world where authentic power and true happiness and joy is found. A place in our heart and our mind where we can be “happy for no reason”
Life does not have to be so hard. Our unaware ego does not know this or maybe it doesn’t want us to know this. Our ego may think that living with such a belief is irresponsible and unsafe, as it has a tendency to protect us against the unknown and is then comfortable staying trapped in the known.
Ultimately you need to find what is most comfortable for you but I lived so much of my life in so many fears and beliefs that didn’t serve me that believing there was a better way to live and see the world has completely changed my life, my relationships and my health.
As I am human, my unaware ego still has many holds on me – but I am much wiser to them now because I am open to working with all these parts of myself I used to try to avoid, hide or tuck away. I also view my entire life purpose differently – I believe we all have a purpose to bring awareness to these parts of ourselves. This is how we evolve as Souls, grow as humans and ultimately create good karma.
This week’s intention;
This week we bring awareness to and shine some light on our unaware ego. By embracing our right brain characteristics and acknowledging that we all have a “higher self” we can tune into whenever we need to. Our “higher self” is here to help us feel all we are feeling and will guide us to let go of the emotions and the pain. Know that even though it can be uncomfortable and painful to feel all that we are feeling, in the long run it hurts far less than holding it in or holding onto it – which ultimately leads to injury, chronic pain and disease. If you have experienced a fair amount of trauma in your life, I strongly suggest seeking professional help to assist you in clearing the effects of held on emotions and grief from your body (make sure to bring your higher self to the session with you!)
- Today, I practice being in the present moment.
- Today, I bring awareness to my unaware ego. I notice my tendencies, reactions, behaviours and habits. I remember I always have a choice to react differently.
- Today, I choose kindness over stress.
- Today, I choose to be open rather than stubborn.
- Today, I choose compassion & acceptance over judgement & criticism
Once you become aware of your ego’s patterns & behaviors and notice what your tendencies and go-to reactions are, you can begin to personalize your daily intention to move towards your right-brain choices of love, kindness and acceptance and away from your unaware ego’s choice of fear, anger & judgement. This is when life begins to change for the better, no matter what our outer circumstances are.
This awareness begins with shining the light on and embracing our left brain ego fears with the acceptance of our right brain higher self. This gives us the courage to move into the energy of love and ultimately freedom. This is where our self-worth, our self-confidence, our wholeness and self-love resides. This is truly authentic power.
