Show Up for Yourself First (It’s Not Selfish – It’s Essential)

Today, I want to challenge a belief that so many of us carry – the idea that showing up for ourselves first is selfish. We’ve been conditioned to put everyone else’s needs before our own. To care, support, serve… but often at the cost of our own well-being

Showing up for yourself first is not selfish. It’s Sacred.

So many of us were conditioned to put others’ needs before our own – to be helpful, to be kind, to serve, to support. While those are beautiful intentions, they will become distorted when we ignore our own needs in the process.

When we constantly show up for others first, we drain our energy reserves. Then, what are we really offering? Half-hearted presence? A tired body? A resentful spirit? On a good day, we may show up at 50%. On a bad day, we may barely show up at all – exhausted, overstretched and vibrating low.

And what’s worse, when we do this over and over again, people start expecting it. They expect us to show up for them, even when we haven’t shown up for ourselves. That’s not love – that’s obligation. And obligation eventually breeds resentment.

But what if we flipped the script?

What if you gave yourself permission to align within before you engage? To show up for you before you show up for anyone else?

It doesn’t take long. Less than ten minutes. You can even do it while you’re still in bed. Before your feet even hit the floor;

  1. Take a few deep breaths.
  2. Check in with your heart space & gratitude.
  3. Ground.
  4. Align by connecting in awareness.
  5. Connect with what matters to you today. (connect with what you’re feeling and/or needing – just connect inward)
  6. This is Aligning within. Stay within this energy of alignment for as long as you can, by following your slow breathes.
  7. Start your day.

Practice this daily and then you will eventually and authentically;

Align first, then rise.
Align first, then speak.
Align first, then parent.
Align first, then serve.
Align first, then work.
Align first, then do life.

When you show up for yourself first – consistently, lovingly and unapologetically – you’re not taking anything away from anyone else. You’re actually giving more. You’re giving from a full cup. From wholeness. From alignment. And from this space – watch how you begin to naturally make better choices for yourself – in all areas of your life.

And here’s the second half of this truth:

Let others do the same.

It’s not just about you showing up for yourself first. It’s also about letting others show up for themselves first, too. They don’t need your permission – but it’s powerful when you lead by example.

Expecting others to show up for you first (before they have had a chance to tend to their own needs) – that’s the real selfishness.
Allowing everyone (including yourself) to show up for themselves? That’s freedom. That’s love. That’s maturity.

So, if people are pulling at you from 20 different directions, pause. Breathe. Say to yourself:

“I need to show up for myself first.”

Fill your cup. The daily practice above – will fill up your cup! Then, you can show up for your family, your work, your friends, your life – from fullness, not depletion.

That’s the challenge and invitation this week:
Show up for yourself first. Every morning. Every moment you feel off. Align & connect within first, then engage.

It’s not selfish – it’s sacred and essential.

Let your presence come from an overflow of energy due to your alignment and connectedness as apposed to your presence coming from depletion which can eventually hold the exhausting energy of sacrifice. Sacrifice is an agreement many humans believe is noble and required in this life. This is an agreement you may want to question. Is it truly noble? Is it really required? Hmmmm… 🤔
